England messes up at its own perilEngland vs Netherlands England indeed messed up at its own peril. Poor fielding at crucial moments and below par bowling by the more fancied English side allowed Netherlands to claw back into the game and beat them by 4 wickets to register their biggest victory in ICC World Twenty20 tournament. England lost the match from a winning position because of their poor fielding and toothless bowling. At least 3 run out chances were missed by the English fielders which proved crucial for them. While setting the target, their batting also lost steam during the death overs after the openers Ravi Bopara and Luke Wright gave an aggressive start and built a solid platform for the middle order to launch an onslaught. However, the other English batsmen could muster only 162 which was probably short by atleast 20 runs. Set to chase a challenging target of 162, Netherlands played cautiously in periods of QuickStart Batting after losing 2 wickets early in their innings. But they never lost focus midway and played sensible cricket to build a momentum in the middle overs to consolidate the solid but sedate start which helped them to scamper home during the death overs without resorting to big hitting. Tom de Grooth (49 runs from 30 balls and a Batting Momentum of 80) displayed lots of courage while tackling the superior bowling attack of England. Grooth and Peter Borren built an important partnership of 50 runs that gave Netherlands the belief that they could overhaul the target. A cameo by Ryan ten Doeschate provided stability to the chase during the death over (measured by Extreme Performance Batting). During the last over, Netherlands batsmen ran for their lives to notch up the 7 runs required for the victory. Grooth’s superb knock earned him the for ‘Man of the Match’ award. Inspite of loosing, England acquired greater Castrol Index points from the match than Netherlands. Castrol Index measures the performances of a team during the different courses of a match analysing the number of wickets taken and the number of runs given away while a team is bowling and the number of runs made and wickets lost during batting, irrespective of the outcome of a match. England batted better during the first 6 overs and also took more wickets of Netherlands for which their Quickstart Batting and Bowling Efficiencies are higher than Netherlands. England bowled better during the first 6 overs of the chase which also resulted in a higher Quickstart Bowling for them, but Netherlands triumphed over England during the death others (Over 16 to 20) resulting in higher Extreme Performance Batting which also won them the match. With the Batting Momentum of both the teams remaining neck to neck, the higher points that England gathered in the various other parameters of the Index contributed to England acquiring higher Castrol Index for the match. |
