P. ARULMANI 's Question
Q. The great Indian All-rounder of all time, Kapil Dev has been inducted in to the ICC Hall of Fame recently. However, today if you looked at his career figures both in Test and ODI cricket you wouldn't find it breathtaking if you are a teenager. The reason is in modern cricket the numbers have no real meaning, the Tendulkars, Pontings, Laras, Dravids, Muralis, Warnes, Kumbles and many others have made the records of last century's greats look like peanuts! Yet, these greats are remembered and recognised for the quality of service they rendered to the game during their playing days. That is the reason why I believe the Gavaskar Legacy still continues even after Sachin has literally smashed everything that Sunny so laboriously created! What are your thoughts on this?

A. Hi Arulmani, I would like to answer your question in a filmy way. Amitabh is still the Don of Bollywood, there are Shahrukhs, Hrithiks, but Amitabh has his own place in the hearts of millions. Millions of movie lovers still love the eastman color movies of 1970s and 1980s, are'nt they? the reason is simple those are classy and evergreen films which can be remembered for generations. Without doubt Kapil and Sunny are the Indian living legends and i don't see anything wrong in putting them in the bracket of Hall of Fame which they deserve. Naturally Sachins, Dravids, Kumbles will be remembered in the next generations if i am correct, hopefully they will.

A. India is Cricket crazy. If there is one thing that unites Indis it is Cricket. People may have differences because of their caste, creed, tribe, languge, religion and many other thing but Cricket unites every body but I think after 20-20 is introduced cricket has become more like Base ball in US. Knowledgable crowd which some people call is a myth. I think CASTROl can help imprpove the knowledge using a persone like Harsha Bogle. People understand when a player defences or scores runs but they do not understan technique behind it. In my opinion there is no other out door game that needs so much technique. People do not know the field placements like, slips. gully, point, silly point, gully, covers, extra covers, long off, long on, mid wicket, square leg, short square leg, fine leg, leg slip, third man etc. Many people do not understand that usually a short pitched delivery is played of the back foor and a good length is played on it's merit depending on the line and a full length delivery is played on the front book according to the copy book. Many people do not know how a bowler hold the seem and and ball for different deliveries like googly, doosra and a china man. Leave alone the inswing, outswing and reverse swing. Can castrol try to introduce a coaching page in which each of these explained? Is any one intersted in letting the people understand the people understand the technique behind every stroke? Are shall the cricket be base basll of US? This is a question that I tried to ask through your website but failed after many attempts and not an answer to the above question.

A. Cricket is very different today. When the one day was introduced, I was very disappointed because I was a cricketer and that all I learnt in the nets and the grace were lost. While we practiced, if I score a wrong stroke my coach would be angry and used to say disgraceful now strokes like reverse sweep is allowed. It was a gentle man's game. so much money was not there. Important mathced were not played in summer because that would definetly affect the health of a player in the long run. We used to wair for a series for months but today you have it almost every day. International cricketer's are injured most of the times. Cramps were hardly seen in the field in those days. The grace of Vishwanath and Gavasker and missing. Even Kapildev played for the crowds and not for money or records. He was bundle of talent. Cricket of olden or shall I say golden is dead and buried. I must say I still enjoy all forms of cricket.

A. i think with kapil dev, you must realise, he played a lot of cricket in india on pitches that offered him nothing. since he didn't have a lot of support at the other end, he bowled a lot more. while that helped him add wickets, it meant he became a stock bowler at times. but notice that in your list there are no fast bowling all rounders. in recent times we have only had two; shaun pollock, a bowling all rounder and jacques kallis, a batting all rounder. kallis was never the lead bowler and almost always bowled behind the new ball. also, it is best to compare like for like and the gavaskar-tendulkar comparison will take a volume to compile!

A. When you face the fiery pace battery of Holdings, Marshals, Roberts, and Garners etc and yet manage to score 13 hundred's against them is no mean achievement. That record is not broken even by Sachin. Fortunately he didn’t have to face such attacks as Sunil Gavaskar. Sunny bhai played cricket in an era where glory mattered the most. Sachin playing in a period, where people are crazy about numbers. Especially Indian fans nowadays have a mentality to go behind stats. Statistics can be used as a tool to measure the quality but doesn’t necessarily give a clear picture. One tends to get confused with stats. The true lovers of the game will always be able to differentiate the quality of cricket played now and the yesteryears. With the game moving so favorable to the batsmen, there is a remote possibility that even Sachin’s record (some of the invincible records like more than 17000 runs in ODI) can be broken. Records are meant to be broken and even forgotten but the service done to the game by the player will be long remembered. Having said that, test cricket may get relegated to third preferred format behind T20 & ODI. How will the players in the future be remembered? Time will answer that.

A. main reason present day greats have broken all sorts of records is because they have playing almost thrice than past generation of cricketers.so its natural more you will play, more you gonna score and take wickets,so we cant say warne, tendulkars, lara, lack class.it would be unfair as these cricketers are very rare cricketers with natural tralent and flair,at the same time if kapil dev is being recognized for his eforts,it is because of his excellent all rounding skills, tough physical fitness, proven perfromance in tests and one dayers, keeping in mind number of tests and one dayers played at that time.and sachin is smashing records because he deserves to,he has played longer than sunil gavaskar,if gavaskar worked hard, than sachin has worked harder to score that much.
ashan vijay´s Answer
A. Hello arulmani these are stalwards of world cricket who had set a bench mark for youngsters to follow. These players have earned respect with the virtue of professionalism and commitment to the game. You ask a sachin or dravid who they looked up on when they started off they would tell you names of sunny or a kapil dev.Coming to records i tend to disagree with you cant compare a value of 1000 rs 20 years back and then compare directly to 2 decades later. Its as simple as that kapil dev may not have big numbers but kind of impact performances for ex the 172 against zimbawe in the 83 worldcup when india was struggling or sunil gavaskars innings against the dangerous and most feared westindies bowling line up and largely most centuries coming against them .Those days just the mention of playing against them would send shivers down batsmen feets. The kind of batting equipments ,support staff what these players got was nothing compared to facilities bestowed up on todays players. So in whole it would be unfair to compare these players to present generation players. The acheivements by these players are legendery and would remain so.
