Bangalore edge Mumbai to go top

Royal Challengers Bangalore completed a convincing victory over Mumbai Indians and replace them at the top of the league standings.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat, something they had done convincingly in their first two games. They got off to a sluggish start, losing Sanath Jayasuriya and Aditya Tare early and managing 45 runs in the Quick start overs. They were under tremendous amount of pressure from the Challengers and found themselves in a difficult situation with just 74 runs on the board at the halfway mark. Things went from bad to worse in a single Vinay Kumar over, where he picked up the wickets of Ambati Rayudu, Sachin Tendulkar and Dwayne Bravo. This put Bangalore in a very strong position over Mumbai as the Castrol Index worm clearly reflects. Some quick runs from R.Sathish, Kieron Pollard and Zaheer Khan lower down the order helped the hosts post a respectable 151 on the board.

Mumbai needed some early breakthroughs if they were to stage a comeback in the contest but the in-form Jacques Kallis had other ideas. The Royal Challengers’ openers got them off to a flying start as Kallis and Manish Pandey put on 55 runs in the Quick start period. They went on to share an 85-run opening partnership which swung the tie completely in Bangalore’s favour. Robin Uthappa and Virat Kohli chipped in as Kallis kept scoring from the other. It did go down to the last over but the Challengers were always in control and in the end got to their target with ease.

Jacques Kallis was adjudged Man of the Match for his unbeaten 66 in the Challengers’ run chase.

Royals get off the mark in style

Rajasthan Royals completed a convincing victory over Kolkata Knight Riders to register their first win in the competition.

Shane Warne won the toss for the Royals and elected to bat first. They got off to a poor start, losing Michael Lumb on the very first ball. But Naman Ojha and Faiz Fazal put on 42 runs off just 29 balls for the second wicket, taking them to 56 for the loss of two wickets at the end of the Quick start overs. Abhishek Jhunjhunwala anchored the innings from that point with a well planned 45. The Knight Riders did an excellent job in the middle overs, hitting the right areas and picking up wickets at regular intervals. It looked like the Royals would finish with a score of about 155 but Adam Voges struck a couple of lusty blows in the last of the Extreme Performance overs, helping them finish with a very competitive 168.

The hosts carried the momentum from the first innings onto the field and started on top. They restricted the Knight Riders to just 38 runs in the Power Play overs, having picked up the wicket of Manoj Tiwary. They managed to sustain the pressure and kept the scoring down as Brad Hodge and Cheteshwar Pujara failed to break away to play the big shots. The trend continued with the Extreme Performance overs approaching as runs were becoming hard to come by, despite having wickets in hand. The asking rate went through the roof in the last couple of overs and the Knight Riders eventually finished 35 runs short of the target.
