ANSWER OF THE WEEK

is sachin ramesh tendulkar has surpassed from sir donald bradman in greatest batsman ever?
He only has those records because he has played hundreds of matches, I still get a laugh every time some batsman gets congratulated for scoring more runs than Bradman when they have played 3 times as many matches, there are 2 ways to break records... 1) Score a significantly higher number of runs per match than everyone else 2) Play more matches Even if Tendulkar's records are beaten by Ponting or Kallis or whoever they are all just doing it by playing lots of matches their achievements are nowhere near as great as Lara or Sobers or Jack Hobbs (Sobers didnt miss a match in 20 years yet he played only half as many matches as Tendulkar), Tendulkar took 21 Tests more than Lara to beat his record, by your logic anybody who plays for long enough will be the greatest ever, you're entitled to your opinion but dont expect everybody to agree with you.

Hi Srinath, I don't think it is fair to say that the bowlers are lagging behind when it comes to innovation. Infact it is the other way round, they lead from the front as far as innovation is concerned. The batsman are forced to find new ways and means to tackle the new weapons constantly added to the bowlers' armoury. The Doosras, wronguns, slower deliveries, reverse swings, cutters, flippers etc. are just a few examples for the innovativeness of the bowlers. They also change the line and length of the deliveries so as to tackle a particular batsman effectively. And finally there comes the innovative field placements again inline with the individual batsman's strengths and weaknesses. Innovation is needed to tackle a situation which is away from normal. The batsmen coming up with innovative shots of their own in itself is an ample proof that the bowlers are offering something new!

QUESTION OF THE DAY

The great Indian All-rounder of all time, Kapil Dev has been inducted in to the ICC Hall of Fame recently. However, today if you looked at his career figures both in Test and ODI cricket you wouldn't find it breathtaking if you are a teenager. The reason is in modern cricket the numbers have no real meaning, the Tendulkars, Pontings, Laras, Dravids, Muralis, Warnes, Kumbles and many others have made the records of last century's greats look like peanuts! Yet, these greats are remembered and recognised for the quality of service they rendered to the game during their playing days. That is the reason why I believe the Gavaskar Legacy still continues even after Sachin has literally smashed everything that Sunny so laboriously created! What are your thoughts on this?

everyone will have his views on this.according to me though talent is richly available in our country, but we dont have genuine all rounders as before because being an all rounder demands extra physical stamina and commitment, concentrating equally on bowling and batting is not easy, and balace has to be maintained otherwise we will see more of agarkars, pathans because these were not able to commitment equally in both areas.i think last genuine all rounder india had was robin singh, his physical fitness and commitment was there to see.so we dont just need talent,we need commitment and physical fitness and mental toughness to perform the role of an all rounder which takes toll on ur body and mind too.
